The cast of the popular show, which includes Calgary native Cory Monteith, opened their four-city tour in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday night.
The actors who play high school students were on hand. However, the show's adults — played by Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch — were absent. Their presence was acknowledged through taped video messages.
Wearing colour co-ordinated street clothes and appearing in front of simple backdrops, such as gym bleachers, the performers went through a set list that had little cohesion.
As Kevin McHale, who portrays the wheelchair-bound Artie, noted, the show is really just a way of giving back to the fans, who helped keep the series alive on Fox.
"This whole thing kind of feels like a big 'Thank you' to the fans because they have made the show such a success so quickly and so early on."
Some of the highlights included Lea Michele, who plays glee club co-captain Rachel Berry, singing Don't Rain on My Parade and Jenna Ushkowitz crooning True Colors and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. Corey Monteith drums during Mark Salling's Sweet Caroline.
The Glee tour hits Los Angeles from May 20 to 22, then Chicago for May 25 and 26, finishing off at Radio City Music Hall in New York City from May 28 to 30.
